How Can We Build an Education System that Centers Justice, Equity and Well-Being in a White Supremacy Culture?

Join youth and adults from  Voices for Vermont’s Children for an exploration of our shared work focused on education equity. The organizers will share their work with Voices and the Vermont Education Equity Project. Their work together includes community schools as a path to equity; ethnic and social equity standards for diverse and inclusive curricula; literacy and comprehension; youth-led restorative justice in schools; equitable distribution of federal recovery money; and examining how white supremacy culture shows up in our work, and how we address it. More importantly, the goal of the session is to center the experiences, hopes, frustrations and ideas of young people.

Drawing on questions and responses from students across the state, members of the UP for Learning Youth Advisory Council will present the background to their survey on Learning During COVID and facilitate a dialogue about the themes - concerns and possibilities - in the data. The dialogue will engage participants in thinking about how we move forward in reimagining our education system, instead of returning to the status quo.

What Should Be the Purpose of School?

What is the current purpose of school? Is it to educate "productive members of society?" Is it to help "level the playing field?" Is it to help students grow and be happy? Is school something students do or is it done to them? Is there a gap between what is, and what could be? In this session, participants will share their perspectives on these questions and work together to envision ways school might evolve.
